The 81st annual Golden Globes are here to signal a new era for the awards ceremony. With the controversial Hollywood Foreign Press Association now disbanded, the Globes have embraced change this awards season. This is the first year the telecast is airing live on CBS while simultaneously streaming on Paramount+ as part of a new deal. The newly restructured Globes organization made efforts this year to show that diversity and inclusion are a top priority for them moving forward, such as revamping the voting pool. It’s time to see how these changes made an impact as the 2024 Golden Globes winners are revealed.
The 2024 Golden Globes expanded the number of nominees in all 27 categories from five to six – allowing more room for deserving talent in film and television to get the spotlight. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was the most nominated film at the 2024 Golden Globes with 9 nominations but only walked away with two wins. Barbie won Best Original Song for “What Was I Made For?” and the first Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, which was one of two new categories introduced this year. The other was “Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television,” which was ironically won by former Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais for his Armageddon Netflix special.
The biggest winner at the 2024 Golden Globes turned out to be Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, taking home the most awards for any film or show with 5 wins. Oppenheimer won Best Picture – Drama, Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor – Drama for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor – Drama for Robert Downey Jr., and Best Original Score for composer Ludwig Göransson. This marks the first Golden Globe wins for Nolan, Murphy, and Göransson. Meanwhile, this is Downey’s third win at the Golden Globes.
Other notable winners in film include Emma Stone for Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for Poor Things, which marks the second Golden Globe of her career. The French courtroom drama thriller Anatomy of a Fall won Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language and Best Screenplay at the 2024 Golden Globes. Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron beat out Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse for Best Animated Motion Picture, which makes it the first non-English film to ever win the Golden Globe in that category. Lily Gladstone also became a first-time Golden Globe winner for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon.
On the side of television, HBO’s Succession came out on top with 4 wins: Best Series – Drama, Best Actor – Drama for Kiernan Culkin, Best Actress – Drama for Sarah Snook, and Best Supporting Actor in any series for Matthew Macfadyen. This marks the first Golden Globe win for all 3 actors. In the limited series categories, Netflix’s Beef took home all 3 Golden Globes it was nominated for: Best Limited Series, Best Actor in a Limited Series for Steven Yeun, and Best Actress in a Limited Series for Ali Wong. Yeun and Wong are first-time Golden Globe winners as well.
FX’s The Bear also won 3 Golden Globes: Best Comedy Series, Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Jeremy Allen White, and Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Ayo Edebiri. This is the second Golden Globe win of White’s career and the first of Edebiri’s. Elizabeth Debicki’s win for Best Supporting Actress in any series for her performance in The Crown was the only other standout TV win. The 81st annual Golden Globes were hosted by comedian Jo Koy and were aired live on CBS while streaming on Paramount+ on Sunday, January 7.
